Ohio State Suspends Meyer For First 3 Games

Ohio State University suspended head football coach Urban Meyer for the first three games of the upcoming season on Wednesday.

Ohio State University suspended head football coach Urban Meyer for the first three games of the upcoming season on Wednesday after an internal investigation into his apparent mishandling of domestic assault allegations made against Zach Smith, one of his former assistant coaches. In addition, the suspension was due to a statement he made about the situation in July, in which they believe he misrepresented what he knew.

Meyer will not be able to contact anyone involved with the team until September 2. This means he will not be on the sideline for their first three games against Oregon State Rutgers, and #16 TCU. This may seem like a big suspension to some, but to many others, this is nothing more than a slap on the wrist and it will continue to be discussed for months, if not years, to come.

In a statement on Wednesday, Meyer admitted that his close friendship with his former mentor, and former Ohio State coach, Earle Bruce, clouded his judgment. Bruce is the grandfather of Zach Smith. He said it was because of this that he missed or ignored certain red flags with Smith’s situation.

“I followed my heart and not my head,” he said in the statement. “I gave Zach Smith the benefit of the doubt.”

In addition to Meyer, Ohio State also suspended their athletic director Gene Smith. His suspension will run from August 31-September 16. This will also look like nothing more than a slap on a wrist to many. But Smith has taken responsibility and said that he failed as a leader after he learned the police were investigating Zach Smith in 2015.

In a statement put out by Ohio State, they said, “Although neither Urban Meyer nor Gene Smith condoned or covers up the alleged domestic abuse by Zach Smith, they failed to take sufficient management action relating to Zach Smiths’ misconduct and retained an Assistant Coach who was not performing as an appropriate role model for OSU student-athletes.

“Permitting such misconduct to continue is not consistent with the values of the University and reflects poorly on Coach Meyer, Athletic Director Smith, and the University. Their handling of this matter did not exhibit the kind of leadership and high standards that we expect of our Athletic Director, Head Coach, Assistant Coaches and all on the football staff.”

Canelo Signs Ridiculous $365M Deal With DAZN

Streaming service DAZN just signed the biggest name in boxing, Canelo Alvarez, to an eye-popping five-year deal worth $365 million.

The future of boxing was in question a few weeks ago when cable powerhouse HBO announced they would no longer be broadcasting fights. But now, thanks to up and coming streaming service DAZN, it looks like their future might be as bright as ever.

Canelo Alvarez, the middleweight world champion and possibly the biggest star in the boxing world just signed a 5-year, 11-fight deal worth a ridiculous $365 million. It is the richest deal in the history of sports, with Giancarlo Stanton’s 13-year, $325 million deal with the New York Yankees coming in second. And when you remember that DAZN has only been around since September, it’s especially mind-boggling.

Alvarez’ first fight under the groundbreaking deal will come on December 15 in his first fight in the super middleweight division when he faces Rocky Fielding at Madison Square Garden. Oscar De La Hoya, who’s company Golden Boy Promotions represents Alvarez, said that “Canelo is the highest-paid athlete in the world. He’s extremely happy.” I should hope so!

“This is only from my hard work,” Alvarez said in a quick interview with ESPN after the deal was announced. “The most important thing to me was being able to give the fans the opportunity to see me fight without having to pay the $70 or $80 for my fights on pay-per-view. That was the most important thing, more important than what I am making.

“It’s very important for me to give the fans the biggest fights and the most important fights, and I promise you I will always do that. The December fight with Fielding is a dangerous fight. I am moving up in weight, and I don’t know how my body will feel. But I always want to take on challenges, and I am very happy my fans will be able to see me fight for a small cost.”

And the deal is more clever than you may think as far as DAZN is concerned. It also gives them the rights to over 7,000 hours of Golden Boy fights. Which includes every single fight of De La Hoya’s career. And playing some classic boxing matches can surely help them build an audience and gain viewers. Golden Boy will also help DAZN by producing other segments to air along with live events. A mutually beneficial partnership for sure.
