It was announced on Tuesday that Seattle Mariners slugger Robinson Cano would be suspended for 80 games after testing positive for the banned substance diuretic furosemide. Cano accepted the suspension and it began on Wednesday of this week. It was a crushing blow the Mariners playoff hopes and may permanently tarnish Cano’s reputation as one of the greats of his generation.
Cano said in a statement released through the MLB Players Association, “Recently I learned that I tested positive for a substance called Furosemide, which is not a performance-enhancing substance.” He went on to say, “For more than 15 years, playing professional baseball has been the greatest honor and privilege of my life. I would never do anything to cheat the rules of the game that I love, and after undergoing dozens of drug tests over more than a decade, I have never tested positive for a performance-enhancing substance for the simple reason that I have never taken once.”
Cano was hit by a pitch in the Mariners’ game against the Detroit Tigers on Sunday and actually fractured the fifth metacarpal in his right hand. He had surgery on Tuesday and was already on the disabled list. The MLB said his time on the DL will count toward his 80 game suspension, which is a small silver lining for Cano. But he will also lose $11.85 million in salary for the time missed. Which is most certainly the opposite of a silver lining.
Cano is in his fifth season with Seattle but spent the first nine seasons of his career as a member of the New York Yankees. And he’s been a star for nearly all 14 of them. Over his career, he’s hit 305 homers, has 1,206 RBIs and has a lifetime batting average of .304. Those numbers and, more specifically, where they’ll likely be by the time he’s done had many thinking he was a lock for the Hall of Fame. But now, after this, it’s anything but a lock. The powers that be have been extremely harsh when it comes to considering players that have used banned substances for the Hall.
Cano said that he received the furosemide from a licensed doctor in the Dominican Republic, his home country, because, at least as he understood, it’s used for “various medical conditions.” “While I did not realize at the time that I was given a medication that was banned, I obviously now wish that I had been more careful,” Cano said in his statement. Unfortunately, this likely will not be good enough for Hall of Fame voters. And no matter how accidentally this all may have been, Cano’s legacy might very well be permanently tarnished.
Why The Braves Are Determined To Win Over Workman
The Atlanta Braves rallied for a 6-5 win over Philadelphia on Saturday, disrupting the newly acquired Brandon Workman’s first match with the Phillies. Atlanta’s Adam Duvall scored the winning point after two outs and full bases, finishing the game with a back up the middle.
Workman set out charged for his first game with Philadelphia with one out and gave up a couple of runs. Matt Adams of the Braves quickly took advantage of the breach and finished a two-run double, leading to the Phillies to trail Atlanta by one point at 5-4.
“That’s not the first impression I’m trying to make, obviously,” Workman reiterates after a letting the Braves knock four hits and a run.
Right before Adam Duvall’s winning run, a play by Didi Gregorius of Philadelphia was withdrawn after a video footage review. Gregorius pitched home from a grounder by Travis d’Arnaud. Umpire Chad Whitson already called safe on Alex Jackson upon reaching the plate. However, a review reveals that J.T. Realmuto tagged Jackson out.
Bryce Harper knocked the second-longest home run of his career. His drive also made a record as the 2ndlongest homer at Truist Park. Harper pulled a strategic move by sacrificing in the ninth inning spared some time for Neil Walker to safely slide onto the plate, adding another point to the Phillies.
Mark Melancon, Braves’ closer, also performed blowing up the lead 2-0 with five save attempts. On the other hand, Philadelphia closer Hector Neris gave away two hits and a few scores to a run by Marcell Ozuna and an easy walk opening the eight.
Another walk was by Rhys Hoskins who was driven in by Harper’s second of the two-run hit off Robbie Erlin. The ball shot off the field at roughly 470 feet and descended straight into the seats at the stadium’s middle section’s right side.
The Phillies tried to get back in the game as Andrew McCutchen showed up for Philadelphia, going head to head with Atlanta’s Grant Dayton. Then again, Austin Riley cutback Phillies’ lead to 4-2 after a two-run hit off of Zack Wheeler, who allowed five hits in the game.
Wheeler had quite the strong start said, “I know our fans are struggling with it, but it’s baseball. It’s a hard game. I have trust in our bullpen.” He eventually gave up two runs within seven innings.
This game is Philadelphia’s fifth consecutive loss this season, and sadly, the team has been in this position before. Phillies are falling under the rankings of the major league with an ERA of 7.59. The team has been hopeful for progress with the newest addition to the team through the role of Workman, who was traded into Philadelphia from Boston.
In Other News…
Philadelphia also recently acquired Heath Hembree and David Hale from trades held last Friday.
Atlanta currently leads the NL-East conference by winning five out of six games in the series.
Brian Snitker, Braves’ team manager, said that the win was “nerve-wracking, nail-biting, exciting” and “gut-wrenching.” Sadly for the fans, they were not permitted to physically be present on the stands this season due to the pandemic.
The SoFi Stadium: Los Angeles Rams’ New Home
History and Location
The SoFi Stadium is foreseen to be one of the most maximized stadiums in the United States as it was built primarily to host sporting events such as the NFL and WWE events. The Stadium site was built at the Betfair Hollywood Park, which was originally a thoroughbred racecourse back in the late 1930s.
It was then shut down in December 2013 and was renovated to be a casino called the Hollywood Park Casino. On January 31, 2013, Stan Kroenke, the owner of the St. Louis Rams, purchased a 60-acre parcel of land north of where Hollywood Park Casino was.
According to reports, Kroenke is studying how to convert these lands into a stadium. Other speculations also included converting the land to build into a Walmart, but most of the hearsays mentioned it would be the future training ground for the LA Rams. With a lot of hush-hush from Kroenke for over a year, on January 05, 2015, Kroenke announced that he partnered with Kroenke Sports and Entertainment to build a multi-purpose 70,240 seat stadium designed for NFL matches.
Stadium Plan and Design
Aside from an NFL stadium, The SoFi Stadium project also includes a performance arts venue with over 6000 seating capacity and a Hollywood Park Entertainment avenue, which includes 900,000 square feet of retail, 800,000 square feet of office spaces, thousands of residential condominium units, a luxury hotel with over 300 rooms, public parks, playgrounds, an open space, a lake, pedestrian and bicycle lanes, and even mass transit access to boot! In February 2015, the Inglewood City Council also approved the area to include sports and entertainment capabilities.
Construction for the stadium started on July 14, 2016, and the ground-breaking ceremony happened on November 17, 2016. The stadium was originally forecasted to be finished in 2019, but due to the rainfalls, the opening of the stadium was moved to 2020.
All the concerts originally scheduled for the SoFi stadium to be hosted was canceled. Canceled artists include Taylor Swift, Guns N Roses, Kenny Chesney, Tim McGraw, Motley Crue, and Def Leppard. Taylor Swift’s Lover Tour was supposed to be the grand opening of the SoFi Stadium, which would have made her the first female artist to open an NFL Stadium, but because of the pandemic, this was canceled. NFL games that were scheduled, however, were not canceled. The first regular-season NFL games will start on September 13, where the Rams will play against the Dallas Cowboys. The Rams had an exclusive sneak peek to the SoFi stadium as they held their first practice on August 22, 2020.
Home to the Rams
The LA Rams were the first NFL team to commit to moving to the SoFi stadium, followed by the Chargers as the stadium was originally built for both teams. Both teams have significantly donated a large sum of $200 million stadium loan to be relocated.
The SoFi Stadium is not only considered home to the Rams and the Chargers, but it will also host the Super Bowl in February 2022, the 2023 College Football Playoff National Championship, the LA Bowl in 2020, the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the 2028 Summer Olympics, and WrestleMania 37.
Why Do We Love Sports?
Why do we love sports? There are many reasons why a lot of us fall in love with sports—why many of us continue to support and watch our favorite players, spending time and money to attend regular meets. In fact, some of us aren’t mere fans. Many are also athletes, coaches, and managers of the different teams we love.
Sports as Passion
Being a sports enthusiast is a passion. Many of us watch or play various sports because we consider them a passion in life. Whether it is baseball, basketball, football, or golf, we focus on a specific sport because it provides us with more significant meaning in life. Athletes, for instance, do not merely play a particular sport just because they want to. Many of them train for a sport because it enables them to do something that they’re good at—it allows them to gain self-worth and, in the process, inspire others, as well.
Sports as Platform
Playing a sport enables us to have a veritable platform to be heard and to be noticed. For instance, women athletes get to inspire more women to join a field that is primarily dominated by men. Due to the increase of female athletes excelling in various games worldwide, the measure of being a woman is finally changing. Nowadays, women are gaining more respect due to the influx of more women joining various sports worldwide—games are, in a sense, acting as equalizers, showcasing how women can capably do physical activities that were previously only reserved for men. Sports, then, serve as excellent platforms for women empowerment.
Sports for Healthy Living
Actively playing a specific sport alters your lifestyle. Watching a particular sport also inspires you to try it out, as well. We all know that regular exercise promotes muscles’ development and helps prevent various health complaints like obesity, hypertension, and cholesterol build-up. Sports also perpetuate the body’s production of endorphins—the hormone responsible for the feelings of pleasure and joy. Training for a specific sport eradicates the feelings of depression and worthlessness.
Sports as a Career Choice
When a sport is one’s passion, it can quickly be developed into a career choice. Athletes, for instance, earn because of their expertise in a particular sport. They get to represent the country, earning medals and trophies for the country, their state, their team, and themselves. They also get to inspire others, as well. The crowds in a baseball stadium attest to this glorious phenomenon—sports’ ability to inspire people from all walks of life.
The Sports That We Love
Indeed, sports aren’t just competitions and recreational activities. They are way more significant than that. They have the ability to inspire people to reach their dreams, to represent others, and to gain self-worth. Sports perpetuate healthy living and even provide athletes the careers that they worked so hard for.
